Spring is almost around the corner. Its arrival will also bring with it many occasions for trailer use: renovations, landscaping projects, trailer camper trips, or just taking a load of spring cleaning waste to the landfill. Before hooking up to you utility, camper or cargo trailer, there are a few preparations that should be made.

Make sure that your tow vehicle is in good working order - a little spring maintenance and checks is very important here. Proper transmission function and braking power is of utmost importance. Check transmission fluid and brake fluid levels and tire pressure, and make sure that there is adequate lift left to your pads and rotors. Oil your hitch receiver and draw bar, and if you have a fifth wheel make sure it is lubed – a little dielectric grease is also good to put on your car and trailer end electrical connections.

On your trailer, also check tire pressure, and visually inspect the frame and suspension to make sure there are no cracks or breaks in the welds. The lug nuts should all be tight and bearings not grinding or seized. Check the electrical system on you tow vehicle prior to heading out as well. If equipped with electric brakes, make sure that they are functioning properly, and that the brake controller in your vehicle is properly set for the trailer.

If you have just purchased a new trailer, will be carrying a larger payload than usual, or just felt that you could improve on the performance and safety of your tow vehicle there are a few things to consider. The addition of a weight distribution system can greatly improve ride quality and safety when towing a trailer. If your vehicle squats substantially when towing, a weight distribution system might be your answer. Not all weight distribution systems are the same, and there are options to consider in regards to towing weight and the necessity of sway control. Consult a professional, and always ask questions if there is something you don’t quite understand.

Toughening up your suspension is also an option. Consider adding Air Lift air bags, Timbren suspension enhancements, or SuperSprings to increase your trucks rear suspension capacity. Upgrading brakes with better pads and the addition of a transmission cooler are also easy upgrades to your vehicle.
